Understanding the SHSAT Score Calculation
The Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) is the sole criterion for admission to eight of the nine specialized high schools in New York City. Your SHSAT score is calculated by converting your raw scores from both the English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics sections into scaled scores, which are then added together to create a composite score.
The raw score is simply the number of questions you answered correctly in each section. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so it’s always beneficial to answer every question, even if you have to guess. The raw scores are then converted to scaled scores using a equating process that accounts for slight variations in test difficulty across different administrations.
Our SHSAT score calculator uses historical data and statistical models to estimate your scaled scores based on your raw scores. While this provides a good approximation, your actual scores may vary slightly based on the specific test form and the equating process used by the NYC Department of Education.
To improve your SHSAT score, focus on strengthening your weaknesses while maintaining your strengths. Practice with official SHSAT practice tests, work on time management strategies, and review fundamental concepts in both ELA and Mathematics. Remember that consistent practice and understanding the test format are key to success on the SHSAT.
