32 mm system pitchEvery commercial jig, hinge plate and drawer runner is built to this pitch, so later hardware lands on the holes you are drilling now. It is the reason to use it even in an imperial shop.

Quick answer

Shelf pin holes go in two rows per panel, front and rear, at the same heights, so each shelf lands on four pins. The standard pitch is 32 mm, which is what commercial jigs and European hinge hardware are built around, with the rows set back 37 mm from each edge and 5 mm holes.

Twenty holes per row, eighty in the cabinet. That is a lot of drilling for three shelves, which is the argument for a jig: the count is high and every one of them has to be in the same place on both panels or the shelves rock.

A tighter pitch means finer shelf adjustment and a lot more drilling. Two inch pitch is plenty for a pantry; 32 mm is worth it where hinge and runner hardware has to share the holes.

How to use the Shelf Pin Spacing Calculator

  1. Measure the interior height and depth of the side panel.
  2. Set margins at top and bottom. Three inches is usual; there is no point in holes where a shelf will never go.
  3. Choose the pitch. Use 32 mm if any European hinge or runner hardware will share the panel.
  4. Reference every hole from the same edge and the same face on both panels, so the rows mirror correctly.
  5. Use a depth stop. Through a 3/4 in panel there is very little margin before a 5 mm bit breaks through the show face.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard shelf pin hole spacing?

32 mm on centre, which is the pitch the whole European cabinet hardware system is built around. Imperial shops often use 1 in or 2 in instead, which is fine for shelves alone but will not line up with hinge plates or drawer runners.

How far from the edge should shelf pin holes be?

37 mm, or about 1-7/16 in, from the front edge and the same from the back. That setback is part of the 32 mm system, and it keeps the rear row clear of a typical back panel rebate.

What size are shelf pin holes?

5 mm for the system standard, or 1/4 in for common imperial pins. They are not interchangeable: a 5 mm pin in a 1/4 in hole rattles and lets the shelf shift under load.

Do I need two rows of holes?

Yes, front and rear on each panel, so four pins carry each shelf. A single row lets the shelf pivot about the pins and tip forward the moment it is loaded at the front edge.

How deep should shelf pin holes be?

About two and a half times the pin diameter, so roughly 1/2 in for a 5 mm pin. Use a stop collar or a jig with a depth stop, because a 3/4 in panel leaves very little material behind the hole.

Why do my shelves rock?

Almost always because one row is out of alignment with the other, which happens when a panel is flipped and the setback mirrors. Reference every hole from the same face and the same edge, and mark that face before you start.

Positions are exact arithmetic from the values entered. Panel thickness, back panel rebates and hinge hardware all constrain where a rear row can safely go, so check the drill depth against your actual panel before committing to a full set of holes.
