About this calculator

What waist-to-hip ratio shows

Waist-to-hip ratio compares the narrowest part of your waist with the widest part of your hips. A higher ratio means more fat stored around the abdomen, which is linked to higher risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes than fat stored on the hips and thighs.

The World Health Organization uses 0.90 for men and 0.85 for women as thresholds for substantially increased risk.

Example

A woman with an 80 cm waist and 100 cm hips has a ratio of 0.80, below the 0.85 threshold.

Measuring

  • Measure the waist midway between the lowest rib and the top of the hip bone, after breathing out.
  • Measure the hips around the widest part of the buttocks.
  • Keep the tape horizontal and snug, not tight.
