Area Converter

This converter changes an area between the six units people use most for property, land and floor space: square feet, square meters, square yards, acres, hectares and square miles. Enter a value, pick its unit, and every other unit is shown at once.

It is useful when a listing, plan or deed uses a unit you do not think in — a US home measured in square feet compared with a European flat in square meters, a farm sold in hectares, or a lot size given as a fraction of an acre. Landscapers and farmers also use it to convert field sizes before working out seed or fertilizer quantities.

Factors follow from the international yard and pound agreement of 1959, which fixed 1 foot at exactly 0.3048 m, and NIST Handbook 44 / SP 811 unit definitions. Before 2023 some US land surveys used the slightly longer US survey foot, so older acreage records can differ from the international figure by a few parts per million — far below normal measurement error. Results here are rounded for display, so the last digit of square-foot figures can differ slightly from the exact factor.

Use the factor in the row of the unit you have to reach square meters or square feet, then convert onward.

• Acre: 43,560 sq ft, roughly a square about 208.7 feet on each side. An American football field including both end zones (360 × 160 ft) is 57,600 sq ft, about 1.32 acres.
• Hectare: a square 100 m by 100 m, close to 2.5 acres. An international rugby pitch or a large soccer pitch is in the region of 0.7 hectares.
• Suburban lots in the US are often quoted as fractions of an acre: a quarter-acre lot is 10,890 sq ft and a half-acre lot 21,780 sq ft.
• Square mile: 640 acres, or about 259 hectares; a square kilometer is 100 hectares.

• Using a length factor for area. One meter is 3.28 feet, but one square meter is 3.28² = 10.76 square feet. Square the length factor, never use it directly.
• Mixing units before multiplying. Convert both sides of a room to the same unit before multiplying length by width.
• Treating property area figures as identical. Listing "square footage" may include or exclude walls, garages and unfinished space depending on the market, so compare like with like before working out a price per square foot.
