Quick answer

To convert kilograms to pounds, multiply by 2.20462; to convert pounds to kilograms, multiply by 0.45359237 (the exact legal definition). One stone is 14 pounds and one ounce is 28.35 grams. For example, 80 kg is 176.37 lb, which is 12 stone 8.4 lb.

What the Weight Converter does

Enter a weight in grams, kilograms, metric tonnes, ounces, pounds or stones and this converter shows the equivalents together, including a stones-and-pounds figure for UK and Irish body weights. People use it to read bathroom scales and medical records across systems, to convert recipe and parcel weights, and to compare gym plates or luggage allowances.

All factors come from the international pound of 1959, which is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kg, so the conversions are exact apart from display rounding. Ounces here are the everyday avoirdupois ounce (1/16 lb); precious metals use the heavier troy ounce, covered below.

If you are converting your body weight to track progress, the BMI calculator and the weight loss percentage calculator accept either kilograms or pounds directly.

The formula

kg = lb × 0.45359237 lb = kg ÷ 0.45359237 ≈ kg × 2.20462 lb = stones × 14 g = oz × 28.349523125

The pound's value was fixed by the 1959 international yard and pound agreement and is listed in NIST Handbook 44. Strictly, these are units of mass; scales measure the force of gravity and display it as mass, which is fine on Earth. The US ton (short ton) is 2,000 lb, or 907.18 kg, and the UK long ton is 2,240 lb, or 1,016.05 kg — neither is the same as the metric tonne, so check which one a shipping quote or vehicle rating means.

Worked examples

US body weight to kilograms and stone

A patient's US chart lists 200 lb and a UK clinic wants it in kg and stone.

Inputs

  • Value200
  • FromPounds

Result

  • Kilograms90.718474
  • Pounds200
  • Stones and pounds14 st 4 lb
  • Ounces3200
  • Grams90718.47

200 lb is 90.72 kg, or 14 st 4 lb. Medical dosing and BMI use kilograms, so write the kg figure to one decimal place.

UK stones to kilograms

Someone who weighs 11 stone wants the metric and US figures.

Inputs

  • Value11
  • FromStones

Result

  • Kilograms69.853225
  • Pounds154
  • Stones and pounds11 st 0 lb
  • Ounces2464
  • Grams69853.22

11 stone is 154 lb or 69.85 kg. For a stones-and-pounds weight such as 11 st 6 lb, add the extra pounds separately: 6 lb is 2.72 kg.

Recipe or parcel weight in grams

A European recipe calls for 500 g of flour and your scale reads ounces.

Inputs

  • Value500
  • FromGrams

Result

  • Kilograms0.5
  • Pounds1.102311
  • Stones and pounds0 st 1.1 lb
  • Ounces17.637
  • Grams500

500 g is 17.64 oz, or 1.10 lb. A common kitchen shortcut is 1 oz ≈ 28 g, which is less than 1% out.

Tons, tonnes and troy ounces

  • Metric tonne (t): 1,000 kg, about 2,204.6 lb. Used for freight, vehicles and materials almost everywhere outside the US.
  • US short ton: 2,000 lb (907.2 kg). Used for US truck ratings, coal and gravel.
  • UK long ton: 2,240 lb (1,016.0 kg). Still seen in shipping and older British specifications.
  • Troy ounce: 31.103 g, about 10% heavier than the 28.35 g everyday ounce. Gold, silver and platinum prices are quoted per troy ounce, so do not use this converter's ounces for bullion.
  • Carat (gemstones): 0.2 g, a separate unit from the karat used for gold purity.

Mental-math shortcuts

To go from kilograms to pounds in your head, double the kilograms and add 10%: 80 kg → 160 + 16 = 176 lb (exact: 176.37). To go from pounds to kilograms, halve and subtract 10%: 200 lb → 100 − 10 = 90 kg (exact: 90.72). For stones, remember that 1 stone is about 6.35 kg, so 10 stone is about 63.5 kg. If you need to turn a volume of liquid into a weight, use the density calculator — water is 1 kg per liter, but oils and syrups are not.

How to use the Weight Converter

  1. 1Enter the weight as a single number. For stones and pounds, enter the stones here and convert the leftover pounds separately.
  2. 2Choose its unit: grams, kilograms, metric tonnes, ounces, pounds or stones.
  3. 3Read every equivalent, including the combined stones-and-pounds figure.
  4. 4For US short tons, enter the weight in pounds (tons × 2,000); for troy ounces, convert to grams first (× 31.1035).

Frequently asked questions

How many pounds are in a kilogram?

One kilogram is 2.20462 pounds. Doubling and adding 10% gets you within a fraction of a percent.

How many kilograms is a stone?

One stone is 6.35029 kg, because a stone is exactly 14 pounds and a pound is 0.45359237 kg.

How many grams are in an ounce?

An avoirdupois ounce is 28.3495 grams, so 16 ounces make one pound (453.6 g). A troy ounce for precious metals is 31.1035 g.

Is a tonne the same as a ton?

No. A metric tonne is 1,000 kg (2,204.6 lb), a US ton is 2,000 lb (907.2 kg) and a UK long ton is 2,240 lb (1,016 kg).

Is weight the same as mass?

In physics, mass is measured in kilograms and weight is a force measured in newtons. In everyday use and on scales, kilograms and pounds are used for both, and on Earth the distinction does not change the conversion.
