Quick answer
To convert an oven recipe to an air fryer, lower the temperature by 25°F (about 15°C) and cut the cooking time by about 20%, then check early. A dish baked at 400°F for 25 minutes becomes 375°F (190°C) for about 20 minutes in an air fryer, with a first check at about 14 minutes.
What the Air Fryer Conversion calculator does
This calculator turns the temperature and time from a conventional oven recipe into air fryer settings. It gives the reduced temperature in Fahrenheit and Celsius, rounded to the nearest 5 degrees as most air fryer dials are, the shorter cooking time, and a point at which to start checking.
An air fryer is a small convection oven: a fan blows hot air around food in a compact basket, so heat reaches the surface faster and browning happens sooner. The 25°F and 20% reductions are the widely used starting rule, not a law. Small or thin items often finish sooner than the estimate; dense, crowded or very large items can need longer.
The rule assumes the recipe was written for a conventional (non-fan) oven. If it already gives fan or convection settings, the temperature has been reduced once, so keep that temperature and only trim the time. For meat, poultry and anything reheated, go by internal temperature, not the clock. To resize a recipe for a smaller basket, use the recipe scaling calculator.
The formula
Air fryer temp = oven temp − 25°F Air fryer time = oven time × 0.8 First check = air fryer time × 0.7
| Symbol | Meaning | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| oven temp | Temperature from the recipe for a conventional (non-fan) oven | °F |
| oven time | Cooking time from the recipe | minutes |
| 0.8 | Time factor reflecting faster heat transfer from circulating air | — |
| 0.7 | Fraction of the converted time at which to open the basket and check | — |
This is the same rule of thumb long used to convert conventional oven recipes to convection ovens, applied to the smaller air fryer cavity. The Celsius figure is the converted Fahrenheit temperature, (°F − 32) × 5 ÷ 9, rounded to the nearest 5°C. Enter oven temperatures in °F; if your recipe is in °C, multiply by 9, divide by 5 and add 32 first (180°C = 356°F, 200°C = 392°F).
Worked examples
Roast vegetables from a 425°F recipe
A sheet-pan recipe roasts cubed potatoes and carrots at 425°F for 40 minutes.
Inputs
- Oven temperature425 °F
- Oven time40 minutes
Result
- Air fryer temperature400 °F
- In Celsius205 °C
- Air fryer time32 minutes
- Check for doneness at22 minutes
Set the air fryer to 400°F (205°C) for about 32 minutes and shake the basket at the 22-minute check. Many air fryers top out around 400°F, so this is near the maximum on most models.
Frozen snack at 350°F
Frozen mozzarella sticks whose box says 350°F for 15 minutes in a conventional oven.
Inputs
- Oven temperature350 °F
- Oven time15 minutes
Result
- Air fryer temperature325 °F
- In Celsius165 °C
- Air fryer time12 minutes
- Check for doneness at8 minutes
Use 325°F (165°C) for about 12 minutes and look at them at 8 minutes. Breaded cheese can split if overcooked, so pull them as soon as the coating is golden.
Chicken thighs at the default settings
Bone-in chicken thighs from a recipe that bakes them at 400°F for 25 minutes.
Inputs
- Oven temperature400 °F
- Oven time25 minutes
Result
- Air fryer temperature375 °F
- In Celsius190 °C
- Air fryer time20 minutes
- Check for doneness at14 minutes
Air fry at 375°F (190°C) for about 20 minutes, starting to check at 14. The thighs are done when the thickest part reaches 165°F (74°C) on a probe thermometer, whatever the timer says.
Safe internal temperatures to check against
Air fryers brown food quickly, so the outside can look finished before the center is safe. These are the US Department of Agriculture's safe minimum internal temperatures; measure in the thickest part, away from bone.
| Food | °F | °C |
|---|---|---|
| Chicken and turkey (whole, pieces, ground) | 165 | 74 |
| Ground beef, pork and lamb | 160 | 71 |
| Beef, pork, veal and lamb steaks, chops and roasts (then rest 3 minutes) | 145 | 63 |
| Fish and shellfish | 145 | 63 |
| Leftovers and casseroles | 165 | 74 |
When to adjust the converted settings
- Crowded basket: food piled in layers steams instead of crisping and takes longer. Cook in a single layer, in batches if needed.
- Shake or flip: turn fries, wings and vegetables halfway through so every side gets airflow.
- Cakes and bakes: keep the temperature reduction but check with a skewer from the first check point; tops can brown before the middle sets. Covering loosely with foil helps if the basket design allows it.
- Preheating: many recipes assume a 3–5 minute preheat. Starting cold adds a few minutes.
- Small models: compact baskets put food close to the element, so very thin items such as bacon or toast can scorch at the full converted temperature.
- Fan-oven recipes: if the recipe already lists a fan or convection temperature (common in UK recipes, usually 20°C lower), do not take another 25°F off; just shorten the time.
Oven to air fryer quick reference
Common oven settings converted with the same rule. Times are the converted estimate for a 30-minute oven recipe; scale proportionally for other times. For volume and weight conversions within the recipe itself, use the cooking measurement converter.

How to use the Air Fryer Conversion Calculator
- 1Enter the oven temperature from the recipe in °F (convert from °C first if needed).
- 2Enter the oven cooking time in minutes.
- 3Set the air fryer to the converted temperature and time, preheating if your model recommends it.
- 4Open the basket at the check time, shake or flip, and confirm doneness with a thermometer for meat and fish.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert oven time to air fryer time?
Multiply the oven time by about 0.8. A 30-minute oven recipe takes about 24 minutes in an air fryer, but start checking at around 17 minutes.
Do I need to lower the temperature for an air fryer?
Yes, usually by 25°F (about 15°C). The fan moves heat to the food faster, so the full oven temperature tends to brown the outside before the inside is cooked.
What is 180°C fan in an air fryer?
A fan-oven temperature is already reduced for convection, so 180°C fan can go straight into the air fryer at about 180°C. Shorten the time by around 20% and check early.
Can I air fry frozen food without thawing?
Yes, most frozen fries, nuggets and vegetables cook well from frozen. Use the oven instructions on the pack, convert them here, and shake the basket halfway.
Should I preheat an air fryer?
Preheating for 3–5 minutes gives more predictable timings and better browning, and many manufacturers recommend it. If you skip it, add a couple of minutes.
Can I cook homemade pizza in an air fryer?
Yes, as long as the pizza fits flat in the basket with a little space around it for airflow. Make smaller dough balls than usual; the pizza dough hydration calculator scales the flour, water and salt for any batch size.
