Quick answer
To add business days, count forward from the day after your start date and skip every Saturday, Sunday and public holiday. 10 business days from Tuesday, July 28, 2026 is Tuesday, August 11, 2026: 14 calendar days, because two weekends fall in between. A year has about 261 weekdays, an average of 21.7 per month, before holidays.
What the Business Days calculator does
This calculator finds the date that falls a given number of business days after a start date. It skips Saturdays and Sundays automatically, and skips extra days for any public holidays you tell it fall in the period. It also shows the weekday you land on, how many calendar days that is, and how many weekend days were passed over.
Use it for delivery estimates ("ships in 5–7 business days"), invoice and payment terms, HR notice periods, bank transfer times and project deadlines. Counting starts on the next day, which is the usual convention: 1 business day after a Friday is the following Monday.
Public holidays are not built in, because they vary by country, state and even employer. Look up the holidays in your period and enter how many fall on a weekday. To count the working days between two dates instead, use the date difference calculator; to shift by plain calendar days, weeks or months, use the date add or subtract calculator.

Weekdays per year and public holidays
The number of weekdays depends on which day the year starts and whether it is a leap year. Subtract public holidays that fall on weekdays to get working days, then any personal leave for a single employee.
| Year | Weekdays | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 261 | Starts on a Thursday |
| 2027 | 261 | Starts on a Friday |
| 2028 | 260 | Leap year starting on a Saturday |
Holidays to remember by country
- United States: 11 federal holidays, including Juneteenth (June 19). Banks and federal offices close; many private employers observe fewer. When a holiday falls on a weekend, federal offices usually observe it on the nearest Friday or Monday.
- England and Wales: 8 bank holidays a year; Scotland and Northern Ireland have different sets. A bank holiday that falls on a weekend moves to the next weekday as a substitute day.
- Canada and Australia: holidays differ by province or state, so check the local list.
Only count holidays that land on a Monday–Friday inside your period. A holiday on a Saturday has already been skipped as a weekend.
When business days are counted differently
Court and statutory deadlines often have their own counting rules, such as whether short periods exclude weekends or what happens when a deadline lands on a holiday. Follow the rule that governs your filing rather than a general calculator, and check with a lawyer if a deadline matters. Banks may also treat cut-off times as moving a payment to the next business day, so a transfer sent late on a Friday may not start counting until Monday. For hours rather than days, the time card hours calculator totals shifts across a week.

Frequently asked questions
What counts as a business day?
Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays. Saturdays and Sundays are not business days, even if some businesses open then.
Is today counted as business day one?
No. The usual convention, and the one used here, is that day one is the next business day after the start date.
How many business days are in a month?
Between 20 and 23, depending on how the weekends fall, before public holidays. The average across a year is about 21.7.
How long is 5 to 7 business days?
Usually about 7 to 11 calendar days, since the period crosses one or two weekends, and longer if a public holiday falls in between. An order on a Friday with 5 business days arrives the following Friday at the earliest.
How many business days are in a year?
260 or 261 weekdays. After 11 US federal holidays a federal employee has about 250 working days; in England and Wales, after 8 bank holidays, about 253.
