Quick answer
A word counter splits text on spaces and line breaks and counts the pieces, so "well-known" is one word and "3.5 kg" is two. Characters are counted with and without spaces. Reading time = words ÷ 238, the average silent reading speed for adults found in a 2019 meta-analysis, so a 1,200-word article takes about 5 minutes to read.
What the Word and Character Counter does
Paste or type text into the box and this tool counts words, characters with spaces, characters without spaces and sentences, then gives the average sentence length and an estimated reading time. A small table also tells you whether the whole text fits a 60-character title tag, a 160-character meta description and a 280-character post on X.
Writers use it to hit essay and article targets, students to check assignment limits, and marketers to fit titles, ad copy and social posts. It also works as a reading-time calculator: paste a full article and the reading time line gives minutes at 238 words per minute.
Counting rules differ slightly between tools. This counter treats anything separated by whitespace as a word, so a spaced dash "—" counts as one word, and it counts a sentence wherever it finds a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark. Word processors may disagree by a word or two on the same text. To check how easy your text is to read, run it through the Flesch reading ease calculator.
The formula
Words = number of whitespace-separated tokens Reading time (min) = words ÷ 238 Avg sentence length = words ÷ sentences
| Symbol | Meaning | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| words | Runs of characters separated by spaces, tabs or line breaks | count |
| sentences | Number of places where one or more of . ! ? appear | count |
| 238 | Average adult silent reading speed for nonfiction | words per minute |
The 238 wpm figure comes from Marc Brysbaert's 2019 meta-analysis of 190 reading-rate studies, which found adults read English nonfiction silently at about 238 words per minute and fiction at about 260. Reading aloud is slower, roughly 130–160 wpm for a presentation, so divide by 150 instead to time a speech. Decimal points and abbreviations such as "e.g." also count as sentence breaks, so the sentence count is an estimate for technical text.

Five sentences averaging 5 words each makes the message quick to scan. At 150 characters it would still squeeze into a single SMS of 160 plain-text characters.
Common word and character limits
Character limits are counted including spaces unless stated otherwise. Search engines truncate titles and descriptions by pixel width rather than a fixed character count, so the figures for those are practical guides, not hard rules.
| Where | Limit | Counted in |
|---|---|---|
| Page title tag (search results) | About 50–60 | Characters |
| Meta description (search results) | About 150–160 | Characters |
| Post on X (standard account) | 280 | Characters |
| Single SMS (plain text) | 160 | Characters |
| Single SMS with emoji or accents | 70 | Characters |
| Common Application personal essay | 650 | Words |
Word count to pages and reading time
Page estimates assume 12-point type with 1-inch margins; fonts, headings and paragraph breaks change them noticeably. Reading times use 238 wpm for silent reading and 150 wpm for speaking aloud. To measure your own speed at the keyboard rather than reading, try the typing speed calculator.
| Words | Pages (single-spaced) | Pages (double-spaced) | Silent reading | Spoken aloud |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 250 | 0.5 | 1 | 1 min | 1.7 min |
| 500 | 1 | 2 | 2.1 min | 3.3 min |
| 1,000 | 2 | 4 | 4.2 min | 6.7 min |
| 1,500 | 3 | 6 | 6.3 min | 10 min |
| 2,500 | 5 | 10 | 10.5 min | 16.7 min |
Why counts differ between tools
- Hyphens and dashes: "long-term" is one word here; "long – term" with spaces around the dash is three.
- Numbers, URLs and emails: each counts as one word if it has no spaces.
- Footnotes, headings and captions: they are counted if they are in the box. Many essay limits exclude references and titles, so paste only the body text.
- Characters: emoji and some accented letters can count as two characters in this tool and on some platforms, because of how they are stored.
How to use the Word and Character Counter
- 1Paste or type your text into the box; formatting is ignored, only the characters count.
- 2Remove anything your word limit excludes, such as the title, references or footnotes.
- 3Read the word, character and sentence counts; use characters without spaces only if a form asks for it.
- 4Check the limits table to see whether the text fits a title tag, meta description or post on X.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to read 1,000 words?
About 4 minutes at the average silent reading speed of 238 words per minute, or close to 7 minutes if read aloud at 150 wpm. To total the reading times of several chapters or talks, add them up in the time duration calculator.
How many pages is 1,000 words?
About 2 pages single-spaced or 4 pages double-spaced, using 12-point type and 1-inch margins.
Do numbers count as words?
Yes. A number with no spaces, such as 2026 or 3.5, counts as one word, the same convention most word processors use.
Should I count characters with or without spaces?
Social platforms, SMS and search snippets count spaces. Translation quotes and some academic forms count characters without spaces, and will say so.
What is a good average sentence length?
Around 15–20 words per sentence reads comfortably for most adult audiences. Plain-language guidance for public information often aims lower, so short sentences are rarely a problem.
