Quick answer

Shoe sizes in different countries are all based on the length of the shoe last, measured in different units. US men's sizes are about 1 size larger than UK sizes, and US women's sizes are about 1.5 sizes larger than US men's for the same foot. EU sizes step in units of 2/3 cm, so they are not whole-number matches: a US men's 9 is usually listed as a UK 8 and an EU 42–42.5.

What the Shoe Size Converter does

This converter takes a shoe size in one system, US men's, US women's, UK, EU or foot length in centimeters, and shows the equivalent in the others, along with the foot length in centimeters and inches and the Japanese (centimeter) size.

Use it when buying shoes from an overseas retailer, reading a European or Japanese size label, or switching between men's and women's styles. The most reliable starting point is your foot length: measure it as described below and enter it in centimeters, then check the retailer's own size chart, because brands cut their lasts differently and the same nominal size can vary by half a size or more.

Sizes here are for adults. Children's sizes in the US and UK use a separate scale that restarts partway through, so they need a children's chart. For other unit conversions, the length converter converts centimeters, inches and millimeters, and the ring size calculator does the same job for rings.

The formula

UK adult size ≈ 3 × last length (in) − 25 US men's ≈ UK + 1 US women's ≈ US men's + 1.5 EU ≈ 1.5 × last length (cm)

Formula variables
SymbolMeaningUnit
last lengthLength of the shoe form, usually about 1–2 cm longer than the foot to allow toe roomin or cm
3 per inchUK and US sizes step by one barleycorn, 1/3 inch (8.47 mm)sizes per inch
1.5 per cmEU (Paris point) sizes step by 2/3 cm (6.67 mm)sizes per cm

These are the traditional definitions of the English (barleycorn) and Continental (Paris point) sizing systems. Japanese sizes and the international Mondopoint system (ISO 9407) instead use foot length directly, in centimeters or millimeters, which is why foot length is the most dependable reference. Because the allowance between foot and last is not standardized, published brand charts can differ from each other and from this converter by half a size or more; always check the brand's own chart before buying.

Worked examples

Starting from a measured foot

A buyer measures their foot at 27 cm heel to longest toe and wants to see the equivalent sizes before ordering from a European store.

Inputs

  • Size27
  • SystemFoot length (cm)

Result

  • Foot length27 cm (10.63 in)
  • US men's12.6
  • US women's14.1
  • UK11.6
  • EU42.5
  • Japan (cm)27

Starting from foot length avoids converting a converted size. Compare the result with the retailer's centimeter column, which is usually the most consistent figure across brands.

Reading a European label

A pair of Italian shoes is labeled EU 42 and the buyer normally wears US and UK sizes.

Inputs

  • Size42
  • SystemEU

Result

  • Foot length27.2 cm (10.7 in)
  • US men's12.8
  • US women's14.3
  • UK11.8
  • EU42.8
  • Japan (cm)27.2

EU sizes are smaller steps than UK and US sizes, so an EU size rarely maps to a whole UK or US size. If you are between sizes, choose the larger for walking and running shoes.

UK size to US

A UK shopper who wears a UK 7 is buying from a US website.

Inputs

  • Size7
  • SystemUK

Result

  • Foot length23.4 cm (9.23 in)
  • US men's8
  • US women's9.5
  • UK7
  • EU37.2
  • Japan (cm)23.4

For men's styles, the US size is about one size above the UK size. For women's styles, the gap is larger, typically about 2 sizes, so check whether the US listing is in men's or women's sizing.

Typical adult shoe size chart

Approximate equivalents as listed by many major footwear brands. Foot length is the measured length of the foot, not the shoe. Use this as a starting point and check each brand's own chart.

How to measure your foot accurately

  • Measure late in the day, when feet are at their largest, wearing the socks you would wear with the shoes.
  • Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall and your weight on that foot.
  • Mark the tip of your longest toe (not always the big toe) and measure from the wall to the mark in centimeters.
  • Measure both feet and use the longer one; it is common for feet to differ by several millimeters.
  • For wide feet, look for brands that offer width fittings (such as US D/2E/4E for men or UK E/F/G) rather than going up a length size.

Why sizes vary between brands and countries

There is no single binding international standard for the number printed on a shoe. US and UK sizes count in thirds of an inch, EU sizes in two-thirds of a centimeter, and each brand decides how much room to add beyond the foot. Athletic brands often run small and some European brands run large. Men's and women's US sizes also use different starting points, which is why a unisex sneaker may show two US sizes. Japan, China and Korea label shoes by foot length in centimeters or millimeters, the system closest to the Mondopoint standard used for ski boots and military footwear.

How to use the Shoe Size Converter

  1. 1Measure your foot length in centimeters, or find the size printed inside a shoe that fits well.
  2. 2Enter the number in the Size box (half sizes allowed, for example 9.5).
  3. 3Choose the system it is in: US men's, US women's, UK, EU or foot length in cm.
  4. 4Read the equivalents, then confirm against the brand's own size chart before buying.

Frequently asked questions

What is a US men's 9 in UK and EU sizes?

Most brands list a US men's 9 as a UK 8 and an EU 42 to 42.5, for a foot about 27 cm long. Check the specific brand, as some list EU 43.

How do I convert women's shoe sizes to men's?

Subtract about 1.5 from the US women's size to get the US men's size. A women's 8.5 is roughly a men's 7.

Are UK and US shoe sizes the same?

No. For men, the UK size is about one smaller than the US size. For women, the UK size is usually about two smaller than the US size.

What is my shoe size in centimeters?

Japanese and Mondopoint sizes are simply your foot length in centimeters or millimeters. Measure heel to longest toe; a 26.5 cm foot takes a Japanese size 26.5.

Should I size up if I am between sizes?

Usually yes, especially for running and hiking shoes, where your feet swell and you need about a thumb's width (around 1 cm) of space in front of the longest toe. Many marathon runners, including those pacing long races with the race time predictor, choose half a size up in training shoes for the same reason.
